Benefit of swimming training

As is evident, we each have different customs, needs and concerns. What I mean is that since we are different individuals, with different genetics and experiences, with regards to training, we are each going to need our own.

We can establish different levels of training depending on the experience or level of training we have, that is, if we are beginners, intermediate or advanced .

For each one we must adjust a determined load . When we talk about load, we are talking about the dose of exercise, that is, the volume (total training time) and intensity (amount of effort that it costs us), which should be adequate for us based on our current physical state.

And not only that. As we mentioned at the beginning, swimming is a fundamentally technical sport, which means that in order to enjoy and train properly we must learn its technique well.

But there is no need to be alarmed, because with perseverance and some practical advice we can improve a lot in a short time.

Below, we will give you some basic guidelines for those of you who want to start swimming with lifeguard courses, or have been doing it for a short time, and who can easily carry out a training session both in the pool and in open water.

Swimming training for beginners in the pool

The general objective of swimming training for beginners is to reach a level where training improves and maintains our physical condition.

The 2 main challenges are to increase the resistance to be able to swim continuously without stopping and to improve the position of the body in the water, the efficiency of the strokes and breathing through technique exercises.

It is recommended that you initially stay within a specific distance until you can comfortably complete workouts at that distance. Each person must adjust according to their perception of effort and gradually increase the total meters.

The following is a pool swimming training session aimed at people who have just started swimming. A total distance of 600 meters may seem like a long way at first glance, however if you split it up you can easily complete the distance.

Tip: I would like to point out that in many cases where your swimming technique is not strong enough, you could consider joining a basic swimming course or program with a coach, it can make things easier at the beginning. And if you decide to do it just great, take your time and enjoy the workouts.

Pool training for beginners

Training in the pool to start with this sport is a very good option. This is for the safety of a nice controlled environment that swimming in the pool provides.

  • Pool training session for beginners
  • Training objective : increase the resistance, improve the front crawl stroke.
  • Total distance : 600 meters

Open water training for beginners

Open water swimming with lifeguards certification can be daunting when you come from the safety of a nice, controlled environment like the pool.

You have to deal with waves, currents, cold water, salt water, marine life and many other variables that you may not have encountered before, and this can be scary.

Most likely, the picture you painted in your head is much worse than reality. Although there are some risks, open water can be as safe as a swimming pool, but it tends to be much more fun and rewarding with the great advantage that you can connect with nature .

Tips to help you feel comfortable in open water

Start slow

Your first few times swimming in open water are really exciting, but also quite scary. It's hard for some people to get used to not being able to see the bottom or what's below you.

To feel comfortable and control anxiety, it is best to start slowly for the first few sessions . Immerse yourself in the water with no other objective than to have fun and enjoy the experience . After a few sessions of just having fun and enjoying the open water, you'll be ready to start looking for time or distance goals!
